Plans for a 52m development to house council and government workers in Lowestoft have fallen through, it was announced today.

Waveney District Council, Suffolk County Council and the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS) have been planned for years to build the Waveney Campus, a building to house staff from all three groups in a state-of-the-art development next to Lake Lothing in Lowestoft.

On Friday, it was announced that the partnership has been dissolved, meaning that the project will not go ahead.

A spokesman for the three partners said that plans will now focus on finding a suitable alternative option for CEFAS so that the science laboratories, which employ about 400 people, will hopefully stay in the town.

A spokesman for the project said that 'challenging economic conditions' have made the project's future too uncertain.

He said: 'We have all worked hard to make our partnership work, but economic conditions have conspired against us.

'We are very pleased that Cefas is considering its options here in Lowestoft. We all agree that building a Cefas facility at the Riverside Road, albeit on a smaller scale, capitalises on the investment that has already been made and supports regeneration in the area.'
