It has been yet another eventful year in Lowestoft and Waveney and there is plenty for us to reflect on as we look forward to 2017.

There is no question that next year will be a historic one for the town as we welcome the creation of a brand new town council for Lowestoft and a parish council for Oulton Broad. This has been an issue which I have personally wanted to see resolved for many years and I am absolutely delighted that local people now have a level of representation that has been denied them for far too long.

At a time when Waveney and Suffolk Coastal are considering the merits of a merger to create a brand new super district covering east Suffolk we understand and appreciate that it is important for the people of Lowestoft to have a say in issues that affect them. The decision to create a new town council will empower local people and provide a real opportunity for people who care about the town to play a key role in decision-making. It's a genuinely exciting prospect.

It remains my view that Lowestoft is on the up and plenty is happening to show that investment in the town is based on a positive outlook. As we all know the Government has promised the town £73 million towards the new road crossing for Lake Lothing and preparatory work ahead of construction will get under way very soon.

We also have the £25 million flood protection project for the town to come – a real show of faith in Lowestoft and a vital reassurance to communities and businesses in uncertain times. Lowestoft South Beach also looks fantastic now following the completion of the £2.5 million repair and regeneration work following the 2013 floods and once again, we can boast blue flags for our beaches which welcome tourists and a genuine boost to the local economy each year.

Promoting economic growth is a key aspect of our Joint Business Plan with partners Suffolk Coastal and we will continue to work closely with local businesses, while also seeking to attract new investment to the town. I am very excited by some of the discussions that are taking place regarding Lowestoft and I am determined to ensure that Waveney District Council will play a lead role in bringing new jobs and new opportunities to the town.

It goes without saying that we face financial challenges and yet we continue to deliver important services to our communities and will continue to do so. I am very proud of this council, but also of the people of Lowestoft and Waveney – who I meet every day and who are always positive and optimistic in their outlook. With this in mind, I hope you all have a great Christmas and a Happy New Year.
