“Rule number one of goalkeeping: stop the ball with whatever it hits first!”

That was the reaction of Waveney FC’s goalkeeper coach Marcus Ling after he “demonstrated that beautifully,” this week.

With Waveney holding a demonstration evening with a Ball Launcher at Barnards Soccer Centre in Lowestoft on Tuesday evening, the footballs were fired at various speeds and angles for the goalkeepers.

And after Mr Ling took a 55mph effort directly in the face, he admitted: “It didn’t go in.”

As it was captured on video, posts on the Waveney FC Facebook and Twitter pages said: “Rule number one of goalkeeping: Stop the ball with whatever it hits first!

“Our goalkeeper coach demonstrated that beautifully.

“We had Ball Launcher come down to Barnards Soccer Centre this week to demonstrate with our U18’s squad.”

The club is now hoping “to be able to purchase this fantastic training aid,” and they have set up a JustGiving page for donations.
