PLANS are being put in place to ensure Waveney marks the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in style.

With just three weeks to go until the four-day national celebration, organisers are putting the finishing touches to a host of community events to commemorate the Queen's 60 years on the throne.

More than 100 official street parties have been organised across Suffolk with 69 road closures arranged for the extended double-bank holiday weekend of June 2-5. Meanwhile, five jubilee beacons will be lit in Blundeston, Sparrows Nest gardens in Lowestoft, Southwold, Kessingland and Pakefield cliffs.

Among the major events lined up are a Jubilee music festival in Lowestoft High Street on Saturday, June 2, a 'picnic in the park' at Nicholas Everitt Park in Oulton Broad, a major village celebration in Kessingland which will include a family fun day and an evening laser show and live music and a fireworks display in Southwold.

Mark Bee, the leader of Suffolk County Council, welcomed the way in which people had embraced the Diamond Jubilee and said it would ensure Suffolk played its part in a 'huge national celebration'.

He said: 'Following the county council's decision to waive all road closure charges for Diamond Jubilee celebrations I am delighted to see so many street parties and celebrations are planned to take place across the county.'

Bruno Peek, from Gorleston, who is national pageantmaster for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Beacons, was also delighted at the number of beacons being lit for the Jubilee. He said: 'Lowestoft is going to be the most easterly town in the United Kingdom to light a beacon for the occasion. My aim was to organise 2012 beacons to be lit because we have never lit that number before. But we now have over 4,100.'

A spokesman from Waveney District Council said: 'As we get closer to a bumper Bank Holiday weekend, the excitement is building and we want people to remember that organising a street party is very easy. If communities are thinking about creating a day to remember, simply go to www.suffolk.gov.uk/streetclosures or call Suffolk County Council on 0845 606 6171.'
