Runners from across Waveney were among 38,000 finishers who completed the gruelling London Marathon.

With 17 Bungay Black Dog members, 13 members of Waveney Valley AC and seven members of Lowestoft Road Runners faced with the hottest day in the Virgin Money London Marathon's 38-year history, all completed last Sunday's race safely and returned home in good spirits.

Waveney Valley AC's Ross Lambert was just outside the top 100 finishers as he clocked an impressive 2.38:28. Bungay Black Dog members David Sparshott and Graham Jenvey also recorded impressive sub three hour performances.

Other runners recorded personal best times after pounding along the 26.2 miles of the capital's pavements.

Some completed debut marathons while many raised funds as thousands of pounds were raised for different charities – which included Spinal Research, Prostate Cancer UK and Access Community Trust.

Lowestoft Road Runners' Katy Oldman, who raised funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital, said: 'This was my first London Marathon and something I've wanted to do for many years. It was an amazing experience and quite emotional too.'

Both were raising money for worthy charities – Simon for Whizz kidz, a charity that provides specialist mobility equipment to children who need it. He has so far raised more than £2,000 this year. Karen is raising funds for The Little Princess Trust and has raised more than £1,500.

Lokesh Suraparaju, from Hopton-on-Sea, crossed the finish line at the Virgin Money London Marathon and raised funds for the British Heart Foundation

Dr Lokesh Suraparaju raised £2,500, after taking on the iconic challenge in memory of his father who died of a heart attack in 2002. He said: 'Taking part in the London Marathon was a huge challenge and an incredible experience.'
