I AM disappointed that Waveney District Council failed to fly the Red Ensign at the Town Hall, in Lowestoft, and the war memorial on Merchant Navy Day, which was on September 3.

Ten years ago the Government decided that a day of commemoration would be determined. Local councils were advised of this, with no doubt the suggestion that they should fly the requisite flag above the council offices.
In the second world war almost 30,000 unarmed merchant seamen died as a result of enemy action whilst transporting supplies to this country and to others. They died freezing in the waters of the Arctic, burning in tankers or trapped in sinking ships.
For a council which administers a town allegedly having a marine heritage, surely flying a Red Ensign for a few hours one day a year, should not be too much of an effort.
Shall we see a Red Ensign at the war memorial on Remembrance Sunday?
