COFFEE cups clinked and biscuits crumbled last Friday as businesses, schools and clubs across the country put the kettle on as part of Macmillan Cancer's Support's coffee morning.

And across Lowestoft there were many groups keen to share a cup of coffee or tea and a cake in an effort to raise money for the charity.

The Rotary and Inner Wheel Clubs of Lowestoft were joined by Waveney MP Bob Blizzard for their coffee morning at Parkhill Hotel, in Oulton.

Around 80 people descended on the hotel to enjoy a cuppa and cake, while a tombola also helped to raise more funds for the charity as their total topped 500.

Mr Blizzard said: 'Well done to Macmillan for coming up with an inventive way of raising money that everyone can join in. Together the small individual contributions amount to quite a substantial amount locally and with thousands taking place over the country the sum total adds up to something massive every year.'

Pupils, parents and staff at Roman Hill Middle School, Lowestoft, joined in the World's Biggest Coffee Morning.

As well as coffee, there was tea, squash and some freshly baked cakes on offer with the lemon cake slices proving popular.

This was the second year the school had taken part in the event and on Friday 109 was raised for the charity.

Staff from the Showboat Casino Slots, in London Road North, Lowestoft, also had a fun time raising funds for the charity.

Supervisor Des Knights also arranged competitions and with the help of fellow staff members Tina Hewett and Fabio Silva organised special breakfasts and lunches to boost the fund.

After a successful day a total of 268.31 was raised for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Paint and Create and Cibo, at Henstead Arts and Crafts Centre, raised 107 when they invited customers to join their coffee morning.
