LOWESTOFT'S pier to pier swimming race had to be called off ahead of its 10am start yesterday because of a strong southerly wind causing choppy water.
Organiser Neil Godbold, Waveney council's swimming development officer, said: 'Lowestoft lifeguards took the decision after assessing the conditions.
'It's a disappointment because we had a field of more than 100 swimmers, the biggest in the nine years I have been running the event, but it would have been too dangerous to carry on.'
The 1km swim between South Pier and Claremont Pier has been rescheduled for Sunday, September 20 at 9.45am, with registrations being taken between 8am and 9.15am.
