A woman has been rescued after her car went off the edge of the quay in Lowestoft this morning.

Police were called to the site near the silo on Commercial Road at about 11.45am after a member of the public reported seeing a car go into the water off the quayside.

The Yarmouth coastguard were alerted and the Lowestoft lifeboat was called to the scene at about 12pm.

A spokesman for Suffolk police said that a silver Fiat Bravo had gone into the water and the 30-year-old woman driver, who was alone in the car, had got out and managed to swim to safety.

The woman, who was breathing and conscious, was taken to the James Paget University Hospital at about 12.15pm.
