A wreath-laying ceremony to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day will be held in Lowestoft next week.

Residents are invited to attend the ceremony at Lowestoft railway station next Friday, January 26, which is being held in memory of those killed in the Holocaust and subsequent genocides.

The chairman of Waveney District Council, Frank Mortimer, and the deputy mayor of Lowestoft, Peter Knight, will lay a wreath at the station along with members of Waveney Youth Council, who will also lay a wreath on behalf of local young people.

This will then be followed by a moment of reflection led by Rev Matthew Payne.

Mr Mortimer said: 'Holocaust Memorial Day offers an opportunity for reflection and remembrance of the millions who died during the Holocaust and in subsequent genocides. It also gives us the chance to learn from these terrible events and ensure they are never repeated.'

Mr Knight said: 'The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2018 is the power of words. This important occasion gives us the opportunity to reflect on the past and consider how we, collectively and individually, respond in actions and words to reinforce values of equality and humanity when faced with attempts to restrict fundamental rights and freedoms.'

Wreaths are laid at the station each year in recognition of the arrival of a 'kindertransport' train in December 1938, which carried more than 200 Jewish children who had been evacuated from Nazi Europe. The children were billeted at a number of places including Pontins in Pakefield and St Felix School in Reydon.

The wreath-laying ceremony commences at 10.30am next Friday and is open to all.
