Coastguards, lifeboats and the rescue helicopter were involved in helping a sailing yacht which ran aground yesterday.

The 40ft wooden yacht, called Bosun, ran aground at near the golf club at Gorleston. The only injuries were a grazed finger suffered by one of the people on board.

Both Gorleston lifeboats were called out, the smaller because it stood less risk of running aground itself and the larger so it could tow the boat into Yarmouth harbour. The rescue helicopter from RAF Wattisham attended in case the lifeboats were not able to reach the yacht, but was not needed.

The yacht had travelled from Lowestoft yesterday morning and was on its way back to Scotland, where it is based. It was described as a “lovely, old-fashioned boat”.

Dave Moore, from Yarmouth coastguard, said they were called by someone at the golf club, followed by the crew of the boat. He said: “It was a textbook operation. They were very calm on board, the lifeboat was there in short order, the helicopter arrived from Wattisham in 17 minutes, and the boat was recovered.”
