ARDENT Ipswich Town fan Simon Waters is preparing to make himself 'suffer' in the name of charity - by donning the yellow and green of their deadly rivals Norwich City.

Father-of-four Simon, 39, who works on the reception of Beacon Bingo in Battery Green Road, Lowestoft, has agreed to do his 12-hour shift tomorrow (May 8) wearing a Canaries shirt in the hope that customers will give generously and boost his fund-raising effort .

'Most of our customers are Norwich City fans so I'm hoping that they'll be willing to pay for the pleasure of seeing me suffer by wearing that awful shirt,' Simon said. 'It won't be easy, but I'll get through by reminding myself that all the money is going to good causes.'

The shirt stunt is part of a major fund-raising effort by Simon, prompted by the death of his nine-week-old son Kieran in 1996. It is set to conclude in August with a sponsored 45-mile walk from Lowestoft to RAF Colishall in Norfolk, where Simon was stationed when Kieran died.

Joining his on the walk will be friends and family, including Kieran's twin brother Joshua, now 13.

The date of the walk - August 7/8 - is the nearest weekend to the twins' birthday.

Over the years, Simon has raised about 3000 for charity and he's hoping his latest effort will generate hundreds of pounds for the Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths (FSID) and Help for Heroes.

He began collecting at Beacon Bingo last month and in a bid to prompt customers to put donations in a collecting bucket, he 'rather rashly' offered to put on the Norwich shirt if the total topped 80.

'I actually raised 173.45 so I'm now committed to it!' Simon said.

Simon is planning to charge people an extra 1 to take pictures of him clad in yellow and green.
