Lowestoft's Anthony Ogogo has been selected as part of a team of 12 boxers who will compete for Team Great Britain at this year's Commonwealth Games in India.

Receiving the top news yesterday from his national coach Rob McCracken, Ogogo - who is currently on holiday - was all smiles after being named in the select squads that will see him represent England at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in October.

He joins nine other fighters representing England, with two travelling with the Wales team.

The Triple A Boxing Club member - who becomes the first fighter from the eastern region to compete in the prestigious Commonwealths - was overjoyed with the news.

His club coach John Cremin was equally delighted, having trained Ogogo since he was young.

'This is absolutely fantastic news for the club, for the town and for Anthony,' Cremin said.

'Let's hope everyone rallies behind him now and he goes there and gets a medal, which should secure his place in the London 2012 Olympics.

'This is a major, major achievement - as good as being picked for England at football and going to the World Cup,' Cremin added.

'This is a great opportunity for him and Anthony is more than capable of going there and getting a medal - so now it's all up to him.'

Ogogo is now likely to be in action again at the end of August, before heading off to Thailand for a month long training camp ahead of the games.

This will be the first competition to use the new Olympic weight categories, with Ogogo set to fight at 75kg.

And reflecting on this achievement, coach Cremin added that this is the pinnacle of the sport.

'It's all down to Anthony now, as this is a massive competition which lasts for about a month and will have national television coverage,' he said.

'It is great news as all the world's gaze will be upon him.'

GB Boxing's Performance Director, Rob McCracken said: 'This is an important part of our preparations for 2012 and I am looking for the team to build on the success we had at the recent European Championships and continue the tradition of British boxers doing well at the Commonwealth Games.'
