Another wet and miserable day, with awkward southerly winds, hit the latest races as part of Waveney & Oulton Broad Yacht Club's winter series on Sunday.

The well biased start line for race one led to a confusing huddle at the port end for half the fleet, while the other half sailed off from further down the line in clear air.

Flame (Richard Smith and Graham Reeve) managed to break clear from the port end and led into the first mark.

They were closely followed by Clever Dick (Richard Sullivan and Sue Harper).

But it was the recently re-launched Brimstone (Bryan and Jenny Riley) who were joining in the winter series for the first time this year that found some speed down the short run, and then on the next beat they delayed their tack slightly longer than the other boats to jump into the lead.

Croc (Chris and Gill Jordan) tried three times to overtake Clever Dick, finally managing it - thanks to Richard’s kindness around the last mark – although that same kindness also allowed Pot Black, who was showing some great speed on the spinnaker runs, through into fourth place.

The dinghy fleets were well-depleted, with just three boats in the fast handicap.

Ben Falat was trying a different single-hander in his OK, while the result went to Richard Fryer and Rosie Madin in their RS400 ahead of Simon Beckett in his Laser.

The same biased start line for race two saw Croc in the best position, although Paramour tried to start windward of them, and had to return to re-cross the line.

Croc led the fleet into the first mark, but lost out to Brimstone down the first run - and then to Flame up the second beat, to Clever Dick on the second run, and to Pot Black on the next beat.

Paramour, having sailed up from the back of the fleet, got within two feet of overtaking Croc, although a starboard/port incident in Croc’s favour enabled them to stay ahead.

Bryan and Jenny returned to the fray with two first places, and Richard/Graham had two second places.

Simon Beckett triumphed in the dinghies, with Broad Bean (Ben Falat’s OK) in second place.

Isaac Thomas in his Optimist grabbed two first places, with Nathan Clark in his Topper second.
