A Lowestoft teenager has been hailed as a shining example after being picked for the England squad.

Laura Thacker, who has just celebrated her 16th birthday is set to pull on an England shirt this weekend to make her international debut in a four-team tournament.

Laura Thacker, who has just celebrated her 16th birthday is set to pull on an England shirt this weekend to make her international debut in a four-team tournament.

Thacker has played more than 100 games for Norwich City at youth level and now trains with the ladies team having been originally selected for the Lowestoft Girls Players Development Centre.

After being picked in a squad of 18 players, Thacker will be aiming to make her debut on Friday against Greece, before playing Estonia on September 21 and Norway on September 24.

Ian Thornton, Norwich City FITC Director, said: “The FITC Norwich City Girls Centre of Excellence are very proud that Laura has been selected for the U17 England squad.

“Laura is excellent proof that with excellent effort, desire and ability that the girls' youth development system at Norwich has worked for her.

“We hope this success story will inspire further girls to become involved in girls' football and play for Norwich City and England in the future.”

And Emma Fletcher, Norwich City FITC Girls and Women's Development Officer, agreed

“Laura joined the football club at the age of 12 where she was selected for the Lowestoft Girls Players Development Centre, has progressed to the Girls Centre of Excellence and now has been recognised by her country,” she added.

“Currently we have 32 girls involved in the Lowestoft Centre and we hope more girls will follow in Laura's pathway.”
