When the first Sportability competition was arranged for Rookery Park 20 years ago, the rains poured down and prevented play.

It was hoped that this anniversary competition, two decades later, would enjoy more seasonable weather.

Unfortunately, the rain returned with a vengeance but, although it persisted throughout the day, the competitors were determined to see it out and eventually two visitors from Royal Norwich, Mike Fitzgerald and Adrian Dawes, emerged from a welcome warm bath to claim first prize and take the Whiteside Trophy with a score of 46 points.

Martin Scott with Les Dukes enabled Rookery Park to claim second prize with 45 points. I

In third place, with a point less, came Clive Hill and David Darkin.

The nine hole prizes went to Jim Chamberlin with Robert Halliday and the two “R's” White and Moore.

Former Rookery ladies' captain Clodagh Casolani took nearest-the-pin at the 11th hole.

Nearest in two, on the 16th hole, produced a remarkable approach shot from Chris Alden. The ball never left the ground but he denies having used a putter to play the shot.

Competition organiser, Deryck Halliday, was delighted that competitors refused to let the weather spoil the day.

He thanked those from the bar, the greens and the restaurant for their parts in making the day a success.

He was particularly grateful for the help given by vice-captain David Wright and Steve Whiteside, son of David, after whom the memorial trophy is named.

Over £2,000 was raised to help organise various sporting events in which seriously disabled people can compete.

This meant that over £200,000 have now been raised by Sportability.

Further Sportabilty competitions this year will be held at Royal Norwich, July, Costessey, August, Silvermere, Surrey, August and Dereham October. Anyone interested in competing should contact Deryck Halliday on 01502 569067.
