This being the time of year for ritual humiliation of incoming club captains, Southwold Golf Club held a ceremonial ‘drive in’ for its new captain, Bob Lee last weekend.

The event also involved the new club president (Richard Frost), Ladies captain (Jean Halil) and Seniors captain (Richard Holmes), presumably to perform in such a manner as to make the captain look good – or in this case, average!

The hole chosen for the event was the 18th, which enabled the large gallery to shelter on the club-house verandah from the damp conditions.

While that offered a very good view of the results of the drives, spectators were not close enough to the tee-box to admire the variety of different swings employed.

Hawk-eyed club professional, Robin Mann, tactfully declined to offer any ‘post-match analysis’ of the techniques used.

Bob Lee claimed top honours with a tee-shot that finished just over 12ft from the pin.

Legend has it (of course) that he was very much closer in the previous roll-up!

The other three participants found the green but, tactfully, rather more distant from the target.

While Ladies captain Jean Halil failed to stamp her authority on the event, her husband Harold won the sweep for forecasting the result.

During a buffet lunch in the clubhouse after his ‘drive-in’, Bob Lee offered members an upbeat view of what the club might achieve in the year ahead, notwithstanding the difficult economic climate affecting golf clubs everywhere.
