ASPIRING Olympian Anthony Ogogo and his Triple A boxing club teammate Henry Bacon made it a memorable weekend for the Lowestoft club.

The pair became the first fighters in the club's history to reach the semi finals of the national senior ABA with victories on the east coast on Saturday.

Fighting in the quarter finals at the Ocean Rooms in Gorleston, and roared on by more than 350 fervent fans from Lowestoft, Ogogo and Bacon will now be in action on Sunday, May 2 in King's Lynn.

Ogogo was first in action against 'awkward southpaw' Josh Appell - who came to 'survive and hold' according to Ogogo's coach John Cremin.

'Anthony handled him well and picked up a few good shots as he comfortably beat him 7-0 on points after three rounds - you can't do any more than that,' Cremin said.

'Henry was up against James Lawrence and was 1-0 down after the first round but he made a fantastic comeback winning the second and third rounds easy to win 7-1. It was a great night for the club and it's the first time we've had two semi finalists in the senior ABA championships without a shadow of a doubt.'

For Bacon, his victory was more remarkable given it was his first bout in 18 months, while this was only Ogogo's second bout in the past couple of months since the 21-year-old was selected by the Podium Squad.

And next week, Ogogo will join the Great Britain squad for a 'tough2 international event in Poland. Potentially he could face three bouts, provided he gets to the final, and Cremin said: 'Anthony leaves next Tuesday and it will be a tough competition with all the top countries in action. Getting the extra bouts in is great, and hopefully he will get a gold as the nations get ready for the European Championships in June.

'It will be great preparation as he's due back on April 26 and then has the semi finals on May 2,' Cremin added.

Both fighters will meet the winners from the London or Combined Services categories - with Ogogo likely to be on a 'revenge mission' as he could face Garvey once more, who he controversially lost to at the semi final stage two years ago.
