ROOKERY Park president, Bob Bagshaw, heaved a sigh of relief when the recent rains stopped long enough to get two competitions completed on his annual day of events.

In the morning, former Hambro and Stenson player, Shane Buckingham, seemed to be stranded until seventh reserve Jim Chamberlin was drafted in as his partner.

In the hectic last minute arrangement Chamberlin arrived without his golf shoes and had to make a hasty purchase from the professional's shop.

He then had to dash out to the far away sixth tee in time for the shot-gun start.

Not surprisingly he sent his first drive into the trees and never saw the ball again.

After that he settled down and the new combination blossomed, produced a score of 46 points and won the coveted President's Cup. It was Buckingham's second success in the competition, having won it previously with Chris Soanes.

David Pagan with Chris Reynolds 45pts, Paul Highfield with Shaun Winney 45pts, Paul Soloman with Martin Scott 44pts and Steve Whiteside with Brian Cook, who suddenly re-discovered his golf swing, 43pts took the remaining prizes.

In the afternoon mixed foursomes former ladies captain, Ann Baker with husband Brian won with 33pts over a shortened course.

Peter and Jenny Ives and Alan and Pauline Payne took second and third prizes on a countback.

Mike Stevenson and Sue Bryan claimed the nearest-the-pin prizes.

In a previous mixed foursomes, John Blake was elated to score a superb hole-in-one on the difficult fourth hole.

Imagine his surprise when he arrived at the clubhouse to break his good news only to discover that Ann Lockhart had just also produced an ace on the very same hole!
