IVAN Gilbert, of Lowestoft Lions, recently presented a cheque for 2,000 to young boxer Harvey Jennings who received the monies on behalf of Lowestoft Amateur Boxing Club.

The cheque was a donation from the proceeds of the Lowestoft Lions annual boxing dinner, which was held at Pontins Holiday Centre in Pakefield in February, when 275 diners enjoyed 15 well fought bouts.

Colin Stephenson, from the boxing club, expressed his gratitude for the support shown by the Lions Club and in particular praised organiser Ivan Gilbert.

The cash would be used to help with the running costs and upkeep of their premises in Herring Fisheries Score as well as to purchase equipment such as head-guards and boxing kit.

Mr Stephenson said: 'The Lions boxing dinner was a terrific event and a great way of showing off the talent of the young boxers in the area. We have 30 to 35 youngsters, both juniors and seniors, and include two lady boxers who regularly train at the club on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings from 6.30 to 9pm.' He added: 'Our female boxers are showing great potential and could be featuring in contests in the new season. I would like to invite any potential boxers who wish to develop their skills to visit the club on training evenings or to find out more by calling me on 01502 517881.'
