WITH a fleet of 19 boats on the water at Oulton Broad, the Waveney Class Championships took place last weekend.

There was only one place to start in the first race and Neil and Dee Bowles held it and with one tack they were gone, never to be caught again as they pulled away from the rest with Geoff Little in second place and David Yapp third.

The second race was almost a duplicate of the first with Neil getting the same start and Geoff and David following in his wake again.

By Sunday, the wind had eased and the reefs were taken out, although it was still from the same direction and for the third time the fleet could only watch as Neil won the start and was gone. This time he was chased by George Gower although David Yapp was again in third place.

The series consists of five races with the best three results to count which meant that with three firsts Bowles had the trophy well and truly won.

Geoff Little with two seconds and David Yapp with two thirds were the best placed to take second overall but no one had reckoned on Jack Pickering finding his form in a big way and he had obviously been watching how Bowles had done it and proceeded to do it as well, winning the two remaining races.

Nick Smith sailed an excellent race to take second place in the fourth race while coming in third was Emma Walker having her first sail of the year.

Second and third overall places were still up for grabs as the last race started but Pickering's win gave him just seven points and one point advantage over Geoff Little and George Gower who both totaled eight points and were only separated by the count back to their fourth result.

w The Working Manager National Squib Championship ended on Friday at Lowestoft with another day of excellent sailing conditions to complete a very successful week, spoilt only by the strong winds on the opening day.

Local crew Owen Delany and Mark Duffield had a very steady week and were always near the front and had their best day on Thursday when they reached the first mark in second place and moved up to first on the second round and were never caught as they recorded an excellent win.

While there were massive place changes lower in the fleet, the leading six hardly had any alterations to their places. Peter Marchant finished second with Robert Coyle third. Series leader David Best took sixth place to maintain his overall position.

There was plenty of wind for the final race and once again there were new faces at the front. Alan Johnson won from John Bibby with Chris Hogan consolidating his overall third place. Although Best's fourth place was his worst of the week he was well ahead overall and his sailing brought its reward.
