AFTER a fine pre-season, Lowestoft Town's first team went into Saturday's clash with Alliance Premier reigning champions Downham full of confidence.

But a bowling blitz from the Norfolk side shattered the host's hopes as Matt Reid's debut league match as skipper ended in a disappointing defeat.

Town picked up just two points, with Downham claiming 21 in a convincing seven-wicket win.

Downham won the toss and after overnight rain, the home side were immediately inserted as the visitors looked to strike early. But weathering the early tirade, the opening pair of the experienced Peter Sims and teenage talent Joe Larter kept Downham at bay.

It however proved to be an unlucky 13 for Sims as his departure sparked a collapse that included overseas recruit Sekhoto for a duck. Larter made a solid 24, while Tom Brice - batting at five - was the pick of the batsman as he top scored with 26.

Only two other batsman made it into double figures in a total that was swelled by 35 extras as Town were eventually 128 all out in the 39th over, Stewart wreaking havoc for the visitors with 6-36 from his nine overs.

Lowestoft needed quick wickets in reply, but openers Tullett and Stewart went on the attack, with a good innings of 42 off 51 balls from the latter effectively sealing the win.

Marcus Bishop bowled well for Lowestoft picking up three wickets, including an excellent stumping from wicketkeeper Matt Patnell, but Downham reached their target in the 25th over.

Sunrise Inn MoM: Marcus Bishop.

Fixtures - Tomorrow first team Diss away, Sunday home to Bradenham at 11am in the Carter Cup.
