Norfolk's young paceman Sam Thelwell made a vital early breakthrough to leave Beds 5-1 off four overs of the hosts' second innings at tea on day two of their Minor Counties Championship game at Bedford School. Chris Borrett's power-packed 88 had earlier earned Norfolk a 32-run first innings lead after the visitors were bowled out for 270 in the final over - replying to Beds' 238 all out.
Norfolk trail by 97 runs at stumps on day two of their Minor Counties Championship game against Beds after the hosts closed on 129-4 in their second innings.
Chris Borrett removed dangerman Andy Reynoldson (46) in the final half hour of play - aided by a stunning athletic one-handed take by Norfolk wicket keeper Stephen Gray - before Ziggi Arshad (9) glanced Chris Brown to James Spelman at short leg.
Sam Thelwell had earlier claimed the wickets of James Knott (three) and Gigi Sapal (36) after Borrett's big hitting 88 helped Norfolk to a first innings total of 270 all out in reply to Beds' 238.
Borrett's knock rescued Norfolk who had slumped to 149-7 at lunch but the all rounder and his young Norwich club mate Ashley Watson (45) constructed a timely 115-run eighth wicket stand to nudge the visitors ahead.
Norfolk's experienced middle collapsed prior to lunch to lose four wickets for 43. Resuming overnight on 67-3 chasing Beds' modest total, Brown and Trevor Ward looked untroubled during the opening hour aided by some charitable fielding from the hosts.
Norfolk's fourth wicket partnership had added 46 before Ward (21) holed out trying to launch Will Sneath over long on.
Skipper Carl Rogers (two) spooned a regulation catch to Ziggi Arshad at mid wicket attempting to work spinner Andy Roberts away on the legside.
Borrett crunched two fours down the ground to signal his intent but with the first drops of rain falling nightwatchman Brown (32) was trapped in front by the excellent Roberts - Norfolk's frustrated player/coach looking to the leaden skies for salvation before umpire Wilkinson delivered his verdict.
Roberts struck again to dismiss Great Witchingham prospect Sam Arthurton for a duck but Borrett and Watson repaired the damage on the resumption.
Borrett brought up Norfolk's 150 in the 65th over with a fortuitous boundary through the vacant third man area but raced to his half century with a stylish punch down the ground.
Norfolk moved level with Beds in the 84th over before star spinner Roberts pushed a quicker one through that deceived Borrett in the 88th over. Watson holed out two balls from the end of the visitors' first innings to give Roberts figures of six for 39.
Thelwell struck to remove Knott in a mini session after a heavy shower forced the players to depart 40 minutes prior to the scheduled tea break.
Sapal and Reynoldson constructed a patient half century stand when the late afternoon sunshine returned before the deceptively quick Thelwell trapped Sapal.
Reynoldson brought up Beds' 100 with a stylish six off part time bowler Rogers but Borrett removed the top order batter in the following over. Brown's tempting delivery to snare Arshad leaves the game evenly balanced ahead of the final day.
