Former Norwich City skipper Mark Fotheringham believes he can make his name in Spain's La Liga after flying out to Barcelona at the weekend.

The 25-year-old, who had his contract with City terminated in April, has flown out to the Catalan city for a week-long trial with top-flight side Espanyol.

And the former Celtic man, who has also had spells in Germany and Switzerland, is looking forward to the trip.

“Espanyol want to have a look at me. It's a chance for me to show them what I can do,” he told the Scottish Sun.

“They have been aware of me since November and I know their coach has watched DVDs of my games.

“He liked what he saw and invited me out. I'm really looking forward to it and I honestly believe my pass and move game is suited to Spanish football.”

Fotheringham, who stormed down the tunnel after being substituted during the game against Coventry City in February and never played for the club again, says he has had plenty of other offers for his services since leaving City.

“It's going to be a difficult decision,” said the Scottish midfielder who played 76 games for City, scoring four goals. “I played for Freiburg in Germany and enjoyed the experience but I'm open to staying in Britain.

“No matter what happens over the next week I am not going to commit to anything. I'm a free agent and it's a great position to be in approaching the new season.

“Derby gaffer Nigel Clough has also invited me to start pre-season training with them and I like the idea of that.”
