FRESH from her latest successes in the pool, swimming sensation Stephanie Bird is preparing for a Global challenge later this year.

The talented Lowestoft youngster celebrated another call-up to the Great Britain team by breaking five eastern region S14 records, winning six disability gold medals and registering the fastest female S14 time in the world this year in the 50m backstroke. The Lowestoft and Oulton Broad SC member has been named in a squad of 26 athletes, who will compete for Team GB in four sports at the 2009 INAS-FID (the International Sports Federation for Persons with Intellectual Disability) Global Games in the Czech Republic from July 5 to July 14.

The European gold medallist and British record holder is the only female swimmer on the team this year. But unless she receives some vital funding for the trip, the talented youngster will be unable to fulfil her dreams and compete for Great Britain at the Global Games.

“Stephanie Bird is one of a team of highly committed and motivated athletes who are driven to be the best in the world,” said Tracey McCillen, National Director for UK Sports Association for People with Learning Disability (UKSA).

“Despite being selected to represent her country, she must also bear the financial burden of competition. We invite athletes to represent GB, but must send an invoice to them for that privilege.”

w Local businesses and residents are being encouraged to help back Stephanie's bid - and if you'd like to make a donation to this local athlete or the work of the UK Sports Association, contact them on 0207 490 3057.
