Kirkley and Pakefield made the short journey to Plantation Park, Blofield to play Norwich United and had to be content with a point after missing a second half penalty.

The Royals had their suspended players back in the squad but after their previous two excellent performances manager Mark Willis decided to keep the same team, with the exception of Kyle Haylock replacing the injured Matty Brown.

The first 30 minutes saw very few chances for either team and both keepers handling well and dominating their areas. The best Royals’ attack came after 35 minutes when Jordan Haverson put a fine ball through to Haylock whose shot was pushed out by the keeper Luke Pearson with Jack Herbert just failing to put the ball in.

The second half saw keeper Adam Rix called into early action with a fine one-handed save. Then, on 52 minutes, Jack Herbert was fouled and Miguel Lopez’s 25 yard free-kick was well saved.

Shortly afterwards Haylock was brought down in the area and the resulting penalty saw Cameron Russell’s shot well saved by the keeper.

On the hour Herbert put a good long ball through to Russell who went into the area before the ball was cleared out for a corner. At the other end Owen French made a fine headed clearance from beneath the bar and the resulting corner saw the ball sent out to the Norwich United player George Watts-Sturrock who shot just over from some 30 yards.

A good ball from Lopez to Russell produced a good effort that was well saved before further good defending by the Royals saw the gane remain deadlocked, with a point a piece in an uninspiring game played on a very bumpy pitch.

Team: A Rix, C Bell, G Soares, LHammond (J Hutchinson 89), J Herbert, O French, H Creamer, M Lopez, C Russell, K Haylock, J Haverson (R King 80). Sub unused: L Flower.

The Royals have a home match at Walmer Road this Saturday when they entertain Wroxham (3pm). With both teams locked on 49 points it’s fifth versus sixth, with Wroxham having a two goal better difference but the Royals having a game in hand.

Playing at Walmer Road last Saturday in the Anglian Combination Division One Kirkley and Pakefield Reserves suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Stalham Town. This Saturday they travel to Attleborough Town (1.30pm).

The U23s are away to Spexhall Huntsman & Hounds in a Division One match. The B team are at Dip Farm in a bottom of the table match against Redwood United (both 2pm).
