On a perfect Saturday afternoon for football at Walmer Road, Kirkley & Pakefield were in league action against Newmarket Town, who had lost only two league matches.

The home team welcomed back Matty Brown to the club, starting as substitute.

With no Ben George or Kaiden Goldspink, 17-year-old Thomas Harmer started in midfield with Danny Conroy leading the attack.

The Royals had the opening attack but after this the Jockeys controlled play for a period, scoring the opening goal on 10 minutes after a fine run down the right by Foster saw his good centre fired in by striker Mark Lovell, who beat two defenders to the ball.

After 15 minutes keeper Smith plucked the ball out of the air after a good attempt on goal and he made another good save from Watson after 25 minutes.

With 33 minutes gone a superb clearance out of the home defence found Haylock. His run and pass to Baker saw his shot beaten out, with Cameron Russell on hand to slam home the equaliser from the edge of the 18 yard box.

The second half began with the scores level and the home team coming more into the match. Early on Conroy had a good shot blocked before on 51 minutes Haylock was fouled on the edge of the area. The resulting free-kick was sent into the area from where Kyle Haylock fired in for a 2-1 lead.

On 64 minutes the Jockeys came close when a good shot was well saved low down by the home keeper and Baker then had a fine shot saved before being replaced by Brown who almost immediately saw an effort well saved saved.

On 83 minutes a fine move by Haylock and Conroy saw his good centre find Brown whose header hit the post. With minutes remaining Hutchinson replaced Conroy and then more good work from Brown found Haylock who saw his shot go over before Russell went close.

Russell then produced a fine run and shot only for the keeper's outstretched legs to prevent a goal. By then three welcome points were assured after a fine second half performance against a good Newmarket side.
