With many local games off again Walmer Road survived an early morning inspection on Saturday.

Despite rain throughout from lunchtime the pitch stood up remarkably well for the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division matchm with Kirkley & Pakefield playing hosts to lowly Hadleigh United.

Sadly things didn’t go to plan however, with the visitors coming away with a surprise win as the Royals lost for only the third time in 19 matches.

Kirkley, who were unbeaten in their last five matches, were forced into three changes with players away on stag weekends.

Missing were leading scorer Liam Harvey-Cooper, Max Wall and the influential Lewis Hammond - coming in were Lee Will, Tarren Grint and Miguel Lopez.

The Royals dominated from the start with Jordan Haverson hitting the post in the third minute. Shortly afterwards good play saw Baker have a chance saved and then Haylock jinked his way through only for away keeper Nick Punter to stick a leg out to prevent was looked like a certain goal.

All the attacking play was coming from the home team, with a Miguel Lopez shot going just over as did a Jack Herbert header from a corner.

Then, on 40 minutes, Hadleigh had their first real attack of the game and Tom Driscoll shot and scored for a totally unexpected half-time score.

The second half saw the visitors defending their lead and as much as they tried the hosts created very few clear-cut chances.

In fact midway through the half the visitors should have increased their lead with just about their only chance of the second period.

With the home team pressing hard Herbert had a good effort kicked of the line in the closing minutes, but missed first half chances and a poor second half contributed to the Royals’ surprise 1-0 defeat after their recent good displays.

East Point Sports man-of-the-match was Jack Herbert.

Kirkley & Pakefield: A Rix, M Wilson, T Grint, M Lopez, J Herbert (capt), L Flower, K Haylock, J Haverson (J Hutchinson 75), K Baker, L Will, M Holt (D Blades 70). Unused sub: J Jenner.

Kirkley & Pakefield have no match this weekend. They are next in action on Saturday, February 24 when they travel to second placed Coggeshall.
