Last Saturday’s 6-2 league defeat at Newmarket Town saw the Kirkley & Pakefield plummet to the foot of the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division.

The weekend team selection started badly for the Royals with three strikers out - two injured and Dylan Blades suspended - and defender Elliot Whiteside also out with a long term knee injury.

Three goalkeepers were also unavailable for various reasons so last season’s youth team keeper Jordan Read came in for his first team debut. Also in was reserve captain Jack Jenner, having a rare first team outing.

In the 11th minute keeper Read was brought in to action, making a great one handed save from a Steve Spriggs shot but on 15 minutes the Jockeys took the lead when Groves powerfully headed in a good centre, giving the keeper no chance.

Read then twice made good saves before, on 20 minutes, Kyle Haylock slotted home the equaliser following a corner. Lopez and Williams both missed good chances then on 40 minutes a mazy Haverson run set Lopez up with only the keeper to beat but he was foiled. Read kept the Jockeys out just before the interval, splendidly pushing a long range shot over the bar.

The Royals had two openings to score at the start of the second half then the home team broke on 50 minutes for Groves to slot home his second of the game before Diaper slid home a quick third. Haverson continued to do some excellent work up front and finally his run paid off when his centre to Tarren Grint was put away for the Royals’ second on 68 minutes.

On 74 minutes keeper Read, who had made a fine debut, made a horrible mistake from a corner and Diaper scored his second and the home team’s fourth. Five minutes later a good Spriggs volley made it five and Groves then just missed out on his hat-trick before Bacon thundered in number six.

The final score rather flattered the home team but on their second half performance they deserved the points.

Kirkley & Pakefield: J Read, J Jenner (K Collyer 90), T Grint, L Hammond, J Herbert, L Flower, K Haylock (C Wicks 85), C Eagleton, J Haverson, M Lopez, G Williams (M Tacon 80).

A weakened Kirkley & Pakefield Reserves team lost 2-0 at Watton United in Anglian Combination Division One while the B team lost their opener 5-2 at Beccles Caxton Reserves.
