Kirkley & Pakefield win penalty shoot-out to make cup progress

PUBLISHED: 07:46 22 September 2017

Kirkley & Pakefield were back in action at Walmer Road on Tuesday evening when Division One side Norwich United Reserves were the visitors for a Thurlow Nunn League Challenge KO Cup match.

It was an eventful game, with the Royals winning a penalty shoot-out to progress after the match had ened 1-1 after 90 minutes.

The home team were unchanged for the third successive match, while Norwich included former Royals striker Lee Will upfront.

Early on Eagleton had two fine shots both saved, then Lopez fired over and the match was still even at half-time.

On 51 minutes the home team had the ball in the net only for the effort to be disallowed for a foul on the keeper. Shortly afterwards the Royals were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the area for a foul and Miguel Lopez stepped up to fire past a stranded keeper from 20 yards to put the home team 1-0 up.

Just three minutes later United equalised through Daniel Henery with a well placed header.

Hammond had a couple of shots well tipped over by keeper Lemmon and Blades’ shot near the end was put out for a corner, but the scores remain level at 90 minutes.

The tie then went straight into penalties with the Royals winning 4-3, their scorers being Lopez, Williams, Hammond and Wilson, with captain Herbert blasting the second kick against the bar. Keeper Rix made one good save with United seeing their last kick blasted against the bar.

The win gives Kirkley & Pakefield an attractive home second round tie against neighbours Gorleston on Tuesday, October 31.

Kirkley & Pakefield: A Rix, J Jenner, T Grint, L Hammond, J Herbert (c), M Wilson, K Haylock, C Eagleton, (G Williams 80), J Haverson, M Lopez, M Holt (D Blades 80). Sub Unused: L Flower.

Kirkley & Pakefield Reserves were well beaten 6-0 at Walmer Road last Saturday by the UEA. The A team also lost heavily at Normanston Park where Stanford beat them 6-1. The B team were the only winners of the weekend, beating Ellingham 6-2 on the 3G Arena.

The Kirkley & Pakefield FC Under 18s Youth Team recorded an excellent 4-0 away win at Ipswich Wanderers in the Suffolk County FA Under 18s Midweek Youth Cup last Thursday evening. Their reward for the win was an away tie at Woodbridge Town in the next round.
