KIRKLEY progressed in the FA Vase after being given a fair test by an experienced Newmarket side who came back strongly in the second half.

In the opening five minutes, Ian Dawson had a floated effort saved by Huyler, while a Nathan Stone effort hit the side netting in the first five minutes.

The hosts eventually broke the deadlock in the ninth minute when a delicate Russell Stock flick on was curled into the net by Chris Henderson.

In a rare Newmarket attack in the 27th minute, Robert Woodcock came out and miskicked his clearance and John Olive took advantage to put the ball back into an empty net and half the deficit.

Kirkley soon regained the lead when Justin Fox, who moments earlier had fired just wide, sent in a corner which Russell Stock glided past Huyler for a 2-1 half-time lead.

A determined Newmarket came out after the break and Olive hit the side netting when in a good position.

A point blank save by Woodcock denied Lane a goal as Kirkley were forced onto the back foot, but the hosts were able to wrap up victory three minutes into injury time when man-of-the-match Scott Martin sent Nathan Stone into the box to hammer in the final goal of an entertaining match.
