Lowestoft & Yarmouth Rugby Club are on the brink of signing Tongan international Dave Tiueti.
Scott Nelson’s side are hoping to secure Tiueti in time for next season when they embark on life in London League Two having recently gained promotion.
Tiueti, who has 21 international caps to his name and more than 50 league appearances for Magners League side Ospreys, will also become the club’s rugby development officer to help with L&Y’s work in the community.
Nelson admitted that he is looking forward to Tieuti, a centre, boosting the club’s ranks.
“For Dave to join us would be a tremendous boost for the senior side as his experience will be invaluable as we go forward in London League 2,” he said. “Players of his ability do not become available often in this part of the world so we are very keen to secure his services.”
Junior section chairman Jerry Stone hopes the signing will allow the club to continue its work in local schools.
“This is a great opportunity for junior rugby in the area. We are making plans for Dave to assist us in building on the successful community work that the club is already carrying out in local schools.
“We are also planning to talk to Leicester and Northampton about developing L&Y as a satellite Centre of Excellence for Rugby.
“Dave has a good deal of experience in spotting potential elite players and we will also be looking at athletes from other sports for that potential. Rugby is an excellent sport for the improvement of young people building on the core values of sportsmanship, discipline, teamwork, enjoyment and respect.”
n L&Y face Upminster this Saturday at Gunton Park in the fourth round of the Senior Vase looking to progress to the quarter final, kick-off 3pm.
After the massive disappointment of Newmarket cancelling the scheduled league fixture last week due to being unable to raise a side L&Y should be well rested and Director of Rugby Scott Nelson has decided to keep the same squad that was to travel to Newmarket with the addition of himself having recovered from the fractured sternum that kept him out for six weeks.
L&Y should feel confident going into the fixture having beaten Upminster twice this season in London League 3NE. Lowestoft captain Marc Thomas is taking nothing for granted though. “Upminster have nothing to lose and are more than capable of causing an upset if we take the game lightly,” he said.
“We have all said we want to go as far as we can in the Vase and a potential runout at Twickenhan for the final should be more than enough to spur the lads on.”
