THERE was a sombre start to this Ryman League Premier Division fixture as players, supporters and an honour guard of sea cadets held a minutes silence in memory of those who had given their lives in the service of the country.
Unfortunately the game that followed did little to raise the mood of the spectators with virtually no goalmouth action or excitement.
Long serving Wealdstone manager Gordon Bartlett, with over 1000 games in charge of the visitors, was delighted with the battling performance of his side as they frustrated the Trawler Boys throughout the 90 minutes to gain an unexpected point.
For the Blues, with Matt Nolan and Joe Francis injured and Lee McGlone suspended, the diminutive strike force of Jamie Forshaw, Danny Bloomfield and Adrian Forbes were always going to struggle for aerial supremacy.
Neither keeper had much to do with Andy Reynolds being the first in action saving comfortably from an overhead kick by Chris O’Leary. Within a minute Forshaw sent in a shot from 18 yards but straight at Wealdstone keeper Jonathan North.
Curtis Haynes-Brown was high and wide with a header following a neat build up down the right through Forbes and Scott Mitchell. The only real chances in the game came within seconds of each other as Forshaw fed Bloomfield whose shot hit the post and bounced out to Jamie Godbold who drilled it goalwards only for North to tip over the bar in spectacular style.
Lowestoft were enjoying long spells of possession but couldn’t carry the threat into the penalty area. It was a similar story from Wealdstone with glimpses of talent from Kieron Forbes and Peter Dean but nothing to test Reynolds.
Lowestoft sent on Dale Cockrill and Joe Clark to try and add life to the attack but to little avail. They became more desperate with their attacks as the game reached its final stages. Smith’s free kick picked out Greg Crane but his header looped wide of the target.
A strong run down the right by Andrew Cave-Brown saw Cockrill get onto the end of his cross but his header flashed inches over the top.
