LOWESTOFT started the New Year in the superb style with a well deserved victory over Sudbury.

Both teams competed well from the whistle moving the ball round well. But it was Lowestoft who created the best of the early chances with Yvette Redpath, Jess Betts and Sarah Rogers all going close from short corners.

Lowestoft continued their attacking play with Jo Lockwood and Hannah Davey combined well down the right. Lowestoft's defensive unit of Hannah Nunn, Grace Lawrance, Hannah Johnson and Jo Pilbrow looked strong as they denied Sudbury chances.

The second half saw a much more determined Lowestoft starting to control the game with Emily Firmin, Victoria Betts, Judith Masters and Emily Piper dictating the play from the midfield.

Lowestoft were now first to every ball and pushing forward at every opportunity. The deadlock was soon broken as Victoria Betts pounced on a loose ball and slotted it past the keeper.

Lowestoft continued piling on the pressure with Sudbury finding it difficult to deal with the skill and speed of Jess and Izzy. Against the run of play Sudbury drew level making the most of their few chances as their captain sent a rocket of a shot past Jo Pilbrow.

Lowestoft responded to the shock of the goal by stepping up a gear, with each player giving their all. Jess Betts was determined to get on the goal sheet as she skilfully beat several players before narrowly shooting wide.

Lowestoft then got the goal they deserved as Emily Firmin swooped to meet the ball and send her shot off the post and into the goal. Lowestoft were now firmly in control and playing fast flowing hockey, Judith Masters was unlucky not to increase the lead as she skilfully got the end of a brilliant one touch team move.

With full time fast approaching Izzy Rothon made sure of the points after good work down the right from Hannah Davey and Yvette Redpath…much to the delight of the nervous supporters on the sideline!

The Wherry Hotel Player of the match was spilt three ways between midfielder Victoria Betts and speed demons Izzy Rothon and Jess Betts.
