THERE were mixed fortunes for the town's top two football teams in the second round of the FA Vase.

An 83rd minute winner saw the Magpies of Dereham swoop to a 1-0 victory in a controversial clash at Walmer Road.

Nine-man Kirkley & Pakefield were undone by Stuart Garner's 83rd minute strike, which were enough for the visitor to progress to the third round of the national competition.

K&P saw Daniel Tacon dismissed for a second yellow card and then lost skipper Justin Fox, sent off for a foul on Adam Smith. Dereham took full advantage as Ollie Willis' cross was only half-cleared to Garner, who struck a 20-yard left-footed drive beyond home keeper Robert Woodcock and into the net.

Meanwhile, over the bascule bridge, last season's finalists Lowestoft entered the competition having being exempt from playing in the Vase thus far and they eased past Tiptree with a 2-0 victory at Crown Meadow.

Darren Cockrill gave the Blues the lead on 51 minutes and Jamie Godbold wrapped up the win on 87 minutes to send The Blues into today's third round draw.
