SAILING in 2008 started last Sunday on one of the best days for sailing there could be with a crisp westerly wind and bright sunshine and not surprisingly the numbers out were the best of the winter series so far.

A westerly produces long runs down the Broad which suits most classes except the modern asymetric designs who have to zigzag down the Broad which is not there fastest point of sailing and in addition they have to cover a greater distance.

So although three RS designs easily lead the fleet with Richard Smith out in front their lead was nothing like big enough and on handicap the winner was the leading Laser sailed by Matt Frary who moved up from eighth on the water, just one place behind David Frary sailing a Finn who moved to second with another Laser sailed by James Cully third.

The Squibs were lead from the first mark by Bryan Riley, followed by Richard Ling and Jim Tubby and these three were well clear of the fourth boat.

Jim moved up a place on the second round and they stayed in that order to the end.

Flip Foulds lead the two Toppers in the Slow Handicap but rounded the leeward mark on the wrong hand and was followed by the others as well as the Optimists.

But since no one gained an advantage and they all sailed the same course the result was allowed to stand with Jack Rushton leading his brother James, the same result that they had in the second race.

Tom Johnson took third in the first race while Oliver Chapman was there in the second.

The second Fast Handicap followed a similar pattern to the first with the RS designs out in front but David Frary in his Finn again picked up several places to win with Duncan Madin second and Phil Highfield who had finished first on the water dropping to third.

Matt Frary lead the Lasers throughout with James Culley second while Steve Cole moved up to third.

The same three Squibs took the first three places in their second race but there was a difference from the first in that Jenny Riley had taken over the helm of Brimstone and recorded her first win of the series.

Richard Dell was going very fast and overtook Jim Tubby to take second position.
