THE pre-season football action has got underway for the newly-assembled Kirkley and Pakefield first-team squad, with two away draws from their opening fixtures.

At Hadleigh on Saturday, K&P fell behind to Chris Cowan's well-struck volley for the home side. But after the interval, with both sides making changes throughout the game, Lee Hunter fired in an equaliser on 79 minutes to secure a well-deserved draw.

And on Tuesday, at the Tangerines of Diss, it was the turn of two of K&P's new recruits to take the limelight. A brace for midfielder Justin Fox - his first for the club - bettered another first for K&P from former Wroxham team-mate Lee Gilman.

They shared the three goals for their new side in a 3-3 draw with Robert Taylor's Diss outfit.

Speaking to The Journal yesterday, K&P manager Nick Shorten was in a buoyant mood as he prepared for the new campaign.

“The warm-up games have started well with both Hadleigh and Diss giving us very good work-outs and both looking like strong promotion contenders,” he said.

“Our players look in great shape which is a testament to the hard work they have put into training and to the excellent coaching and fitness programmes delivered by Mitch (Rumsey), Paul (Graham) and Dave (Burrows).

“The games were both drawn - for us it is not the result that matters pre-season - we are looking at the performance of the players both individually and collectively and we have taken a lot of positives away from both games as well as a good understanding of where we need to improve,” he admitted.

“The big positives have been the way the new lads have settled in very quickly and the foundation we are building for the team spirit to grow.”

K&P will be holding their annual senior five-a-side tournament at Walmer Road this Sunday.
