FOR more than 100 years, the Lowestoft and Oulton Broad motor boat club has organised powerboat racing on Oulton Broad.

The club held its annual general meeting at the clubhouse on Everitts Park last month. Brian Shulver stood down as Commodore after four years in the big seat to take over the publicity role, with 2009 vice commodore Tony Calver taking the reins as Commodore and Barry Turner stepping in as vice Commodore.

This weekend the club's World F4 champion Scott Curtis takes a trip to Monaco to receive his award from the sports governing body the UIM. The club has had much success in this well supported class worldwide in recent seasons, Brian Shulver was runner up last year, Mark Williams was World champion in 2008 and Brian Block was in third place in 2006.

The main event on the local calendar this season is the national championships taking place on the early May bank holiday Sunday 2 and Monday, May 3 when all the countries top drivers will be racing on the broad.

The racing season starts on the Broad on Thursday, April 22 at 6pm which is not only the first round of the club championship but the only time for our drivers to set up their boats for the National.

To join the club as an ordinary member, which gives you access to the club enclosure with catering, bar facilities and close contact with the drivers and race boats telephone Joy Shulver on 01502 573112 and she will give you details of the great deals on new memberships for 2010.

If you are aged between nine and 100 and would like to have a go at racing then call Joy or Brian on 07775 900 916 and they can give you information on training boats to hire for an evening's racing or equipment for sale to join our increasing band of drivers.
