A SAD story with a happy ending!

That was the reaction of physical education teacher at Pakefield Middle School, Sue Asher, this week after pupils in her year five and six tennis club had a surprise memento from a national newspaper.

All the children received tennis ball binoculars thanks to Mrs Asher's recent trip to Wimbledon.

“I went with my son Nic (local sailing sensation) to queue for Wimbledon tickets on the first Friday, and as we stood in the queue various newspapers were giving free gifts away with the paper,” she said.

“I bought a paper from the Daily Mail and got a free pair of tennis ball binoculars.

“I thought they would be good as runner up prizes for my tennis club so purchased four newspapers and put the four binoculars in my bag.”

However, problems then occurred as she tried to take these items through security - as Wimbledon staff would not let them through and the items were confiscated.

“I did protest saying they were for 9-10 year olds trying to encourage them to continue playing tennis but they would not change their minds and took them off me,” she said.

“What incensed me even more was that in Wimbledon I saw some members of the public with them round their necks!”

Upon returning home Mrs Asher e-mailed the Daily Mail and Wimbledon.

“Wimbledon only send standard replies and so they have not responded personally but the Mail were very helpful and as I had pleaded for my club they sent me 30 pairs of binoculars so all the pupils received one,” she smiled.

“So from a disappointing start, good came out of it!”

And this extra-special gift for all the pupils that have attended the club throughout the summer term was also boosted, with two pupils receiving Wimbledon ball keyrings as special prizes for showing good sportsmanship.
