ROOKERY Park's new captain, David Wright, took up golf 25 years ago when he joined the Beccles Golf Club.

It was close to the Europack firm where he worked, also for 25 years, as the managing director.

Three years after taking up the game, he moved to Rookery Park.

Although he has never won a competition at Rookery, various lesser prizes have enabled the new captain to reduce his handicap to 18.

The theme of his drive-in followed the Wright's love of cruising and he had to dress as a sea captain.

During the various trick shots, Wright stunned the audience by cracking three shots off ridiculously high tee pegs long and straight down the fairway.

Having raised expectations, when the time came for his real shot the onlookers braced themselves for a record to be broken. It was. The new captain missed the ball completely and became the first Rookery captain to drive in with a fresh air shot. Organisers quickly produced a second ball, which, he hooked viciously into a copse of trees.

Wright intends to enjoy his year of captaincy and his aspiration is to bring the various sections of the golf club, as well as individuals, closer together to help make Rookery Park into an integrated centre for those who love golf.
