Kirkley & Pakefield entertained Ely City in a re-arranged Thurlow Nunn Premier Division League match on Tuesday, created after a successful FA Vase run by the Robins to the last 16.

The match opened brightly for the Royals and they should have gone one up after just three minutes with Nathan Stone shooting wide with only the goalkeeper to beat.

A couple of minutes later saw Will hit a good shot from distance just over, before Whiteside had two good left-wing runs, the second of which saw his strike go narrowly wide after a great long-range through pass by Stone.

Lopez had a good shot saved before the visitors mounted several attacks to which the home side reacted with some strong defending.

The Royals hit the post through Haverson before a goalmouth scramble followed but to no avail as the whistle blew for the end of a goalless first half.

The second period again opened brightly for the Royals and Kyle Haylock put them into the lead in the 46th minute following a good cross from Will.

The Robins equalised 10 minutes into the half with a strong header from a corner but Ross King scored a well-taken goal on 61 minutes after good work by Haylock and Stone to put the home team back in front.

A further good header from King and 25-yard shot by Lopez were both gathered well by the away keeper as Kirkley and Pakefield went all out to make the game safe.

However, on 67 minutes the Robins levelled once again with a header.

The topsy-turvy game continued and in the 74th minute, following good attacking play, the Ely keeper fouled Haylock for a home penalty, which Miguel Lopez calmly dispatched to put the Royals 3-2 up.

On 82 minutes it was Ely who had a penalty awarded after Jack Herbert handled and they duly scored to level once again and complete a thrilling six-goal second period.

In the closing minute Stone found the net with a glorious strike but the assistant flagged for offside.

K&P: Tibbles, Eagleton, Whiteside, Lopez, Herbert, Flower, Haylock, Haverson, Stone, King, Will. Subs: Smith, Woods, Tacon, Holt.
