Thurlow Nunn League round-up: Joy for Kirkley & Pakefield and Great Yarmouth Town but Gorleston's slump continues

Fans of clubs on the east coast witnessed a feast of goals - not all of which were enjoyable.
Premier Division Kirkley & Pakefield and First Division promotion hopefuls Great Yarmouth Town smashed in five and six respectively during a Saturday to remember. But it was a far less enjoyable afternoon for Kirkley’s top-flight rivals Gorleston as they shipped half a dozen, without reply, on a day to forget at Mildenhall Town.
Braces from Ross Gilfedder and Ross King helped Kirkley play their nap hand at home against Long Melford. Miguel Lopez also got on the scoresheet as the Royals recorded a handsome win.
There was nothing pretty about out-of-sorts Gorleston’s latest defeat as their winless run stretched to nine matches. Ricci Butler’s men didn’t even net a consolation at Mildenhall as their slump – which has left them just four points above the relegation zone – continued.
The Greens boss’ former club Yarmouth are certainly not looking over their own shoulders as they stormed to a seventh win on the spin. Four-goal hitman Mitch Forbes inspired the second-placed side’s 6-1 thumping of Leiston Reserves. The Bloaters’ other strikes came courtesy of Ady Ager and Declan McAvoy. The win leaves the Wellesley club eight points above Halstead Town, who are in the fourth position that Yarmouth finished in last term.
Elsewhere in the second tier, Downham Town drew 0-0 at Braintree Town Reserves, King’s Lynn Town Reserves (goalscorers Dylan Edge 2, Alex Clunan and Alfa Jalo) beat AFC Sudbury’s second-string 4-1, Diss Town (Sam Page and Jamie George) triumphed 2-0 at Dereham Town Reserves, while March Town United (Ondre Odain) ended his side’s five-match losing streak as they drew 1-1 with Haverhill Borough.
In the Premier Division, relegation-threatened Fakenham Town’s desperate plight deepened as they crashed to a 5-1 defeat at home to FC Clacton. Ricky Claxton scored for the Ghosts.
Thetford Town, also in the bottom three, were thumped 4-0 by Godmanchester Rovers and the side directly above the drop zone, fourth-from-bottom Swaffham Town, also lost, 1-0 at Newmarket Town.
Norwich United (Matthew Daniels and Ben Jones) took another step towards retaining their title by winning 2-1 at Saffron Walden Town. The table-toppers are six points clear of Stanway Rovers with two games to go.
In the United Counties League Premier, Wisbech Town almost blew a two-goal lead before winning at Rothwell Corinthians. Goals from Billy Smith and Stuart Cobb put the Fenmen in control but three red cards, one for their own Michael Frew, slowed the visitors’ momentum. They were pegged back before Adam Millson struck a late winner.
