Waveney bagged an important three points in the Premier Division of the Anglian Combination as they returned to form with a battling performance.

The visitors, who had taken just two points from their previous four fixtures, had Ant Etheridge making his full debut after impressing last week from the bench.

Bradley Hough was back and he replaced Michael Tacon who was unavailable while Daniel Tacon replaced Ritch High, who dropped down to the bench.

In difficult conditions both teams tried to play their passing game but Waveney created most openings in the early stages as Hough, Etheridge and Allen all went close.

Both defences remained on top form with Tacon and Bloomfield providing a solid partnership and giving little change to the St Andrews attack.

Full backs Taylor and Peek were both having fine games and got forward several times to start Waveney attacks.

The midfield quartet of Jarvis, Burgess, Allen and Shepherd were all in top form and the Hough and Etheridge partnership was looking good.

The breakthrough came on 65 minutes after a fine move from Waveney saw Peek arrive in the box. He opted to set up Jarvis to his right but the pass was a little heavy.

Jarvis played the ball back and Peek smashed the ball high in to the net to the delight of his team mates.

Waveney weren’t in the mood to surrender the lead and continued to work hard as conditions and the state of the pitch worsened.

Mawford and High came on to replace Shepherd and Etheridge, who had both put in a good shift, for the final 15 minutes as Waveney comfortably saw out the remainder of the match.

This was a much needed three points against a very good St Andrews side who have been in fine form of late in what was an entertaining game.

Waveney entertain Robert Fleck’s Mattishall this Saturday at Saturn Close (2pm kick off).

Wavaney man-of-the-match: Johnny Jarvis.

Team: James Bergin, Adam Taylor, Harley Peek, Ryan Bloomfield, Daniel Tacon, Sam Allen, Johnny Jarvis, Carl Burgess, Ant Etheridge, (Tom Mawford 70), Bradley Hough, Sam Shepherd, (Ritch High 75). Unused sub: Michael King.
