Waveney up and running after winning eight goal thriller

PUBLISHED: 09:09 08 September 2017

Waveney secured their first win of the season in the Anglian Combination Premier Division as they overcame Acle 5-3 after a poor start to the game.

With several injuries and unavailable players Waveney brought in Kirk Gowing for his first game of the campaign and also gave a start to striker Connor Swan.

Within 25 seconds of the kick-off disaster struck as Drake ran unchallenged and smashed a 25 yard effort past Bligh. Waveney tried to reply but struggled to make early in roads as Acle looked comfortable in defence.

Waveney did equalise on 20 minutes however as Gowing played a glorious ball behind the Acle defence for Adam Taylor to fire past the on rushing keeper with a smart finish. The same two players combined five minutes later as Taylor squeezed home a shot from just outside the box.

Waveney remained on top, with Jarvis and Tacon beginning to dominate the middle of the park.

At the break Mark Clay replaced Mawford and Waveney soon added a third. Connor Swan chased the ball down the right before Gowing slid in for a close range finish from the pull back across goal. Waveney failed to build on a good start to the half as Acle added a second with a goal on the break. Acle then had a good spell of pressure which the hosts had to withstand.

James Langdale came on with 15 minutes to go and within five minutes made his mark with his first goal for the first team. A good move down the left saw Nelson Carinhas find his way into the box and he unselfishly teed up Langdale to smash home from six yards out.

Waveney added a deserved fifth goal as Langdale grabbed his second, this time running at the Acle defence and holding off his man to fire home a fine solo effort. Acle did score a third in stoppage time as a shot from distance deceived Bligh but Waveney were well worth the three points and that important first win.

Next up is a home game in the Mummery Cup against Caister tomorrow afternoon (2pm).

The Tecflo Energy Services Ltd man of the match was Kirk Gowing.

Waveney: Jimmy Bligh, Matthew Wilson, Ryan Bloomfield, Ritchi High, Daniel Tacon (Andrew Hammersley 80), Johnny Jarvis, Connor Swan (James Langdale 74), Nelson Carinhas, Tom Mawford (Mark Clay 46), Kirk Gowing, Adam Taylor.
