Waveney Valley Athletic Club's cross-country season got underway with the first fixture in the Suffolk Winter League fixture at Framlingham.
The course was the customary demanding route around the grounds on Framlingham Castle, but the heavy rainfalls in recent weeks made it even more challenging with lots of slippery slopes around the castle moats plus lots of deep water in the surrounding meadows for runners to cope with.
Waveney had a total of 60 runners competing over the three races, four in the U11 race, six in the junior one lap course and 50 in the two lap senior race which included many newcomers to cross country races.
James McAllen was the first runner home for the club in the junior one lap course in crossing the line in 24th place in 15.08, which secured him sixth place in the his U13 age group. William Browne was 29th in 15.28 and 12th in his age group.

In the senior race best placed runner for Waveney was Dominic Oliver who clocked 34.16 in second place overall. Paul Wright made an impressive debut in his first cross country race for the club in recording 43.29 in 102nd place.
Sarah Norman was the first lady home for the club in crossing the line in 161st place overall and 16th in the ladies' section. Lauren Finch who has been recording some personal best performances on the road recently was competing in her first cross country race put in very creditable performance in finishing in 263rd place overall and 41st in the ladies' section.
In the combined ladies' and men's team positions, Waveney A, B and C teams all finished in the top 10. Credit must go to Framlingham Flyers for putting on such an excellent event in such tough conditions.
Next fixture in the league will be organised by Woodbridge Shufflers at Sutton on Sunday, December 15.
