ENTRIES have already been received, but more nominations are being sought as the popular annual Active Waveney Sports Awards initiative gathers pace.

The search to find the best sporting stars, who have impressed in the district's arena during April 2009 and March 2010, is now underway.

After being established in 1997, the awards are supported and promoted by the Active Waveney Sports Partnership, The Journal, the Schools Sport Partnerships for Lowestoft & Beccles and High Suffolk and Waveney District Council.

The awards were launched to recognise and reward people involved in sport within the Waveney district area. They are not only given for individual achievement and excellence, but are also presented to honour those people who work behind the scenes, such as coaches, teachers and volunteers, without whom none of this would be possible.

Designed to recognise and reward sporting sensations in the Waveney area, whether they've excelled as an individual or member of a club or team in achieving great success in their chosen sport.

The scheme is a celebration of outstanding achievement, true dedication, total commitment and an enormous amount of hard work carried out by individuals and clubs within the sporting arena.

Examples include the highest standard of coaching, helping others to develop, raising the profile of disability sport, gaining funding, helping to provide opportunities and encouraging people to get involved with sport.

Nominations are now being invited for the 2009-10 Active Waveney Sports Awards, with the closing date for entries on Thursday, April 15.

The judging panel includes representatives from the Active Waveney Sports Partnership, the Lowestoft & Beccles Schools Sport Partnership, the High Suffolk School Sport Partnership, the Lowestoft Journal, Waveney District Council and the voluntary sports sector.

Winners will be announced in the Lowestoft Journal and Beccles & Bungay Journal, following an awards presentation evening in June, to which winners and their sponsors are invited.
