FOUR-MIDABLE Team Waveney fired off another golden shot to the rest of sporting teenagers in Suffolk by lifting the prestigious Suffolk Youth Games trophy once more.

FOUR-MIDABLE Team Waveney fired off another golden shot to the rest of sporting teenagers in Suffolk by lifting the prestigious Suffolk Youth Games trophy once more.

Previous victories in 2005, 2006 and 2007 were surpassed this year as the cream of the 2008 crop not only captured the main award, but they showed great sportsmanship as well in jointly lifting the Fair Play award.

And this week, the consistency of the squad, as well as the same coaches who'd ensured previous year's successes, were praised by Waveney's District Council's sports development team - who were tasked with the co-ordination of the district's representation.

Victory in the Redrow Homes sponsored games was achieved at Northgate Sports Centre in Ipswich on Sunday, as Waveney shone in the 10 events on the day.

They won the badminton, girls' football and tennis sections of the games, but consistent high finishes in the other seven events gave them overall victory by six points.

And this week, the success of the youngsters was lauded upon by key figureheads locally.

Councillor Wendy Mawer, portfolio holder for Regeneration said: “I would like to thank the support received from all team managers, the County Sports Partnership and the Lowestoft & Beccles School Sports Partnership who once again made the Suffolk Youth Games a sporting success for Waveney.

“It was truly a day to remember!” she added.

Councillor Peter Collecott, Waveney Representative on Suffolk Sport, said: “I would like to thank our hosts Ipswich Borough Council for staging an event to be proud of.”

John Pawsey, Chair of the Active Waveney Sports Partnership echoed these sentiments. “I am very pleased that Waveney continues to compete to such a high level at this prestigious county event,” he said. “The success of Team Waveney bodes well for the future of sport and physical activity in the district.”

Waveney District Council's Sports Development Team of Claire Henwood and Jane Lewis were equally delighted.

“To be overall winners once again is a great achievement and is richly deserved for the hard work and dedication that the team managers, volunteers and coaches have shown,” they said.

“We continue to be overwhelmed by the level of support we are given and are very proud to be part of Team Waveney.”
