A popular literary festival was brought to a close today after five days of discussions.

The Ways With Words Literature Festival returned to Southwold between November 10 and 14 with a line-up of speakers to suit all tastes and interests.

They included Alan Johnson, Ben Fogle, Peter Hennessy and Maggi Hambling and covered a range of subjects, from politics to Second World War espionage.

Spokesman Phil John said: 'It has been a hugely successful event this year, especially in terms of ticket sales. We have had a range of talks, David Owen gave a very interesting talk about Winston Churchill's cabinet and the difficult discussion that took place on whether to stand up to Hitler or cave in.

'As always Maggi Hambling was a highlight especially for the audience as this her stomping ground. You never know what to expect from Maggi but that's exactly what you expect. Ben Fogle was also really great in what was more of a conversational piece. We try to mix it up and give a bit of variety.

'He was a naturally charismatic individual on stage and drew in an audience that was not necessarily literary, which was lovely to see.

'Really what we share is a passion for words and ideas- it's as simple as that. The festival promotes discussions and our audiences are always discussing what's going on after each performance and talk. The live event is really important as well as the passion for the work.'
