THE Marina Theatre, in Lowestoft, is staging a special season of events in September to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the second world war.

Topping the bill will be the BBC Big Band and other entertainment includes variety show We'll Meet Again, a slide show featuring Lowestoft in wartime, and Wish Me Luck, a specially-commissioned event packed with music and dancing from the era.

Conducted by Barry Forgie, the BBC Big Band concert on September 6 is a celebration of the golden age of big band music from both sides of the Atlantic. Internationally acclaimed vocalist Lee Gibson will perform a selection of nostalgic favourites.

The evening will also feature music made popular by the most famous bands of the wartime era including Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman and The Squadronaires.

Local historians Chris Brooks and John Holmes present an evening of nostalgia with slides and memories of wartime Lowestoft on September 5, in aid of the Jack Rose Old Lowestoft Society and the Palliative Care Unit at the James Paget University Hospital.

Wartime variety show We'll Meet Again returns with a special matinee performance on September 13. The record-breaking extravaganza clocks up a ninth year on the road in 2009. Acclaimed to be Britain's best matinee show, the team return with comedy star Steve Barclay, Shelley James, Tony Leyton, musical entertainer Andy Eastwood, and the music of The Martyn St James Sound.

Rounding off the season on September 18 and 19, local company VPA productions presents music and songs of the era in a specially produced show, Wish Me Luck.

Accompanied by a soundtrack of classic songs the cast of singers and dancers recreates the magical sounds of the era.
