Big plans ahead for JANiFOUR

In the latest of our IN TUNE features in The Guide, profiling the music scene, reporter SIMON WARD speaks to JANiFOUR - a Lowestoft based folk, pop-rock band formed in February 2014.

Question: Where does your name originate from?

Answer: Our name originates from when Mike was playing solo under the name The Janitor. When the band was originally formed there was four of us, so the JANiFOUR was born.

Q: Who’s in the band?

A: Mike Martin (Vocals/Guitar), Miriam Hanid (Vocals), Nath Beard (Lead Guitar), Oz Levett (Bass guitar), Jamie Drew (Drums).

Q: How did you meet?

A: We were all strangers and then the universe aligned and we met each other!

Q: Where have you gigged?

A: K-Fest 2015 at The Aquarium, Lowestoft and Halloween On Fire at The Mariner’s Rest, Lowestoft. Our favourite was Gizfest, Lowestoft – playing underneath the stars!

Q: Best experience as a band?

A: Halloween on Fire at The Mariners recently. It was a great gig probably due to the fact that everyone – or most – were dressed up in horrendously horrible/cool outfits and were really loving us, and we love playing to an audience who really listens and enjoys our music

Q: What can people expect at a JANiFOUR gig?

A: Sometimes we don’t even know what we can expect at a JANiFOUR gig, however you can be sure of some music at least!

Q: What is the main inspiration for your music?

A: Ourselves! The music comes from us – influence/inspiration is not something we consciously think about, it’s kind of the fuel that feeds the machine.

Q: Who is the main songwriter in the band?

A: Mike wrote most of the material we play at the moment, however we are all writers and are looking forward to using some new material soon that will have been more involved in writing as a band.

Q: What sets you apart from other artists?

A: Maybe the kind of people we are! Every band is different...We just write and perform in a way that comes naturally to us and share it with the people around us. There is only one JANiFOUR!

Q: Where can people catch you live?

A: At a pub or club or festival near you! The Tudor Rose, March 12 at 10pm, and Big Gig, Sunday, August 7.

Q: What are your ambitions for the future?

A: We’d like to travel and play to other audiences, get featured on national radio and make a music video to illustrate the meaning in one of our songs and reach audiences in a different way other than just audio. Also to play on the Wembley Arena stage would be alright too!

Q: Where can readers listen to your material?

A: Soundcloud -
